The remaining 15% includes some of the most safety-critical parts of the whole bike. Here's what's actually involved.
What arrives pre-assembled
The frame, motor, battery mount, rear wheel, drivetrain, and most wiring come done. That's the heavy, complicated part, and it's why the box feels mostly finished when you open it. The temptation is to think you're almost there — but the parts left for you are the ones that matter most for safety.
What you assemble
Typically: the front wheel, handlebars and stem, brakes (aligning calipers and often connecting or bleeding hydraulic lines), pedals, fenders and accessories, and the seat. Then everything needs adjusting — and on a 20+ mph e-bike, "adjusting" isn't optional.
The safety-critical steps
Brakes
The most important system on the bike. Calipers must be centered so pads don't rub, levers firm with no sponginess, and — on hydraulic disc brakes — lines properly connected and bled. Weak or dragging brakes on a fast, heavy bike are the number-one thing to get right.
Front wheel and axle
The front wheel must be seated correctly and the axle or thru-axle torqued to spec. This is the part casual assembly most often gets wrong, and it's the one you least want to fail at speed.
Torque, everywhere
Stem, handlebar, brake mounts, and axle bolts all have torque specs. Too loose is unsafe; too tight can crack components or strip threads. A torque wrench isn't a nicety on an e-bike — it's how you know it's actually right.
Tools you'll need
Allen/hex key set, a torque wrench, a pedal wrench, and often brake-specific tools. Most bikes include a basic kit, but the included allen keys make proper torque hard to judge.
Before the first ride
